About the author
Heiko knows both sides of the problem: the runner who can go for hours, and the swimmer who is out of breath after one length.
Growing up in South Africa as a boy Heiko lacked confidence in the water. That experience shapes how he teaches today: patiently, step by step, and without assuming anything is "obvious".
What his background means for you
Certified swim coach: he breaks front crawl into small skills that a runner can learn one at a time, instead of "just swim more".
Endurance coach: he understands how runners train, think and measure progress, and uses that as the starting point rather than fighting it.
Master Coach (Potential Training): he knows how adults learn movement under stress, and why trying harder in the water usually makes things worse.
Comrades and Two Oceans finisher, plus ultras across Europe: he has lived with a runner's engine and a runner's habits, including the ones that hold you back in the pool.
Why this book
From Runner to Efficient Swimmer: Master the Crawl brings this together. It doesn't start from zero. It starts from where runners actually are: fit, disciplined and frustrated. The examples in the book are composites of runners he has coached, so you'll probably recognise yourself in at least one of them.
Heiko loves swimming in open water.
